June 14, 2009 Woman dies during Elkhart Lake triathlon
Sheboygan Press staff
A South Milwaukee woman died Saturday morning while competing in the Elkhart Lake Triathlon, police said.
The woman collapsed about 8 a.m. near the end of the 400-yard swim course, said race director Jeff Grady. Julie Silletti, 54, was participating in the sprint course, which also includes a 12-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run.
"She was almost finished with the swim portion of the event and she had made it to the point where she could stand in the water, and she was having chest pains," said Randy Boeldt, Elkhart Lake police chief. "Some people helped her to shore and she quit breathing."
Grady said Silletti was helped to shore by another contestant and a lifeguard. Twelve boats with lifeguards were stationed throughout the swim course on Elkhart Lake, he said.
"She was doing a backstroke and stood up in the water and was looking tired, so they assisted her to shore," Grady said.
Boeldt said Elkhart Lake First Responders, who coordinate medical care at the event, treated her at the scene. She was taken to a Sheboygan hospital by one of the two Plymouth Ambulance vehicles standing by.
Grady said a report on Silletti's death will be filed with USA Triathlon, which sanctions the event under authority of the U.S. Olympic Committee. Many athletes were aware of the incident since it occurred in plain view on the beach, but Grady said no announcement was made in an effort to not sour the event for competitors. Grady said the tragedy was a first for the long-running triathlon.
"Over the 10 years we've been doing the event … we've had two broken elbows" from bike crashes, he said. "We've never had a swimming incident. … We've never had anybody transported out of the event by EMS."
About 860 people were registered for the triathlon, which winds through the grounds of the Osthoff Resort and the Village of Elkhart Lake. Half of the competitors took part in the sprint triathlon and half in the Olympic event, which includes a one-mile swim, 28-mile bike ride and 6.2-mile run.
I am sure that I speak for Team GEARGRINDER when I say we are all saddened to hear about the death of Julie Silletti and we send our well wishes and prayers to her family, friends and loved ones as they deal with this tragedy.

Story of Father's Day
Father's Day is a beautiful festival that acknowledges and appreciates the important role played by a father in raising the child and consequently building a stronger society. Though fathers have been revered at all times by civilizations across the globe ironically what was missing until the last century was the official recognition of the significance of fathers in ones life. Father's Day story is the tale of realization of the need for a Father's Day festival primarily by Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Washington. The story narrates Sonora's unflagging struggle to officially set a day to honor all fathers. Thanks to Sonora, today Fathers Day is celebrated in a large number of countries around the world.
The Beginning of Father's Day Story
Historians have recorded that there was a tradition to celebrate Father's Day even thousands of years ago. Their study say that 4,000 years ago in Babylon a son called Elmesu carved a father's day message on a clay card. In his message Elmesu wished his father a long and healthy life. There is no knowledge as to what happened to this father son duo but it is believed that several countries retained the custom of celebrating Father's Day.

A Big GG Thank You goes out to Scott Bowe who referred the Sheboygan Press reporter to me. I referred him to Jordan Mathes. Jordan referred him to Laurel Kleiber.
Laurel Kleiber, 21, of Elkhart Lake, finished second overall among the women with a time of 2:27:13, five minutes behind the winner. She's been running the local triathlon since age 15.
"I got totally hooked — fell in love with the sport," said Kleiber, adding that the sport camaraderie is central to the sport even at the elite levels.
"The competitors in a triathlon are so awesome, so supportive," said Kleiber. "It's like a family out here because it's so many people that are at all the races around the state."
The top local finisher on the men's side was Jordan Mathes, 21, a Kiel High School graduate now attending the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. He took fifth in the Olympic event at a time of 2:15:27, nine minutes off the winner.
Mathes, who runs with Kleiber on the Gear Grinder team, said the sport was a natural choice for him.
"I swam in high school; I ran in high school; I've been riding bike since I was in middle school," he said. "It just kind of made sense for me to put everything together, and once you do one you get hooked."

Technological Failures
I remember when I first started "training" for endurance sports in the early 90's. I was about 14 years old and convinced my parents to buy me a fancy Polar HR monitor for around $150. Heart rate monitors were not the technological marvels they are today. For $150 it did one thing- current heart rate. There was no stopwatch, it didn't tell time, no splits; no average HR, nothing other than a gigantic display of current HR. It was the size of the Garmin wrist mounted GPS devices and had one button- ON/OFF. Regardless, I was beside myself with excitement to start getting feedback from my body and bring my "training" to the next level. For the next year I trained with it religiously, every interval I did was based on what that behemoth was telling me and my easy rides were now governed by it too. I was hooked. When I raced a time trial it was right there with me from the time I started my warm up to the time I crossed the line and began my cool down. I would have been lost without it, which brings me to my point. What happens if the very device that we place so much trust in fails us during a crucial time like a race? If it happened to you would you be able to gauge your effort on perceived exertion, speed or mile splits? Technology is great and I have, and use, almost all the available electronics there are. But, I also spend a fair amount of my training time listening to my body and disregarding external feedback and I think you should too. It would be a pity to train all season for a race only to have your HR monitor or power measuring device that you were counting on for feedback fail during that race and leave you without a plan for pacing. Practice using your internal feedback for your runs and bike rides a few times each week. Respiration rate is a great way to monitor your effort level and it is one thing that I guarantee will never fail you during a workout or race.

Hey John,
I had a lot of fun yesterday racing with a bunch of awesome GG's! I was pretty disappointed with my race but I guess you just gotta take it in stride and learn from mistakes. Anyways, I was talking with Jordan Mathes a bit yesterday and he mentioned that he rented his race wheels from a bike shop or something (I think they were demos), anyways, I asked around a little and thought I'd shoot you a message to see if you might know anyone who might have some carbon race wheels that they might be willing to rent out for a weekend or two. I thought with a couple half ironmans and one full ironman that this might be a nice way to save a few bucks while I try to pay off some school loans :( Let me know what you think or if you know of anyone I could contact. Thanks a lot John, you are doing an awesome job with the team and your hard work really showed yesterday with the strong performance of your athletes.
Train on,
Mark Hering

From Robbie Greco:
I made it! The weather was great and the water turned out to be warmer than it was in years, 59 degrees.
The swim turned out to be harder than I thought. I think I was about 290th in the swim. I think there were about 2000 total.
I did better than I expected on the bike portion. I was worried about the climbs, but made it without a lot of trouble. Not sure of my bike rank.
The run almost killed me. It was 8 miles of up and down bigger hills than I have ever seen. Then came the sand ladder. It was super hard.
Overall, I think I was 582. The bummer is that I missed a trophy by less than 30 seconds, finishing fourth in the 16-19.
Special thanks to Coach Henkel for all of his help getting me ready for this race. I could not have finished the race without it.

Hey JW,
We did well as a team!
We were looking at the results last night, I’m not so sure I went that fast, my Garmin only recorded 33.7mph for my max. And it was a 27.76 mile course. But maybe my Garmin is screwy? I would’ve been faster had I not skidded off the road and almost crashed going down that steep section with the hairpin right turn. I ended up about five feet into the grass in a little ditch and in the process of skidding out and actually saving it from me sliding across the pavement (that area of road hadn’t dried up yet from the rains early in the morning and not one of the race marshal’s shouted anything about a quick steep decent with that turn) but in the process my tubular ended up pealing away and off the rim so I had to struggle to pop it back on. And when I took off again I was a bit hesitant to speed around the turns for fear that it would completely pop off on me since air pressure was the only thing holding it on by then. So after a few more miles of holding back a bit to see how it would respond I said to myself “the heck with it” and then opened it up and just tried to catch as many people as I could. And at one point on the return I came up over a little hill and the marshals were standing in the middle of the lane (one guy was even talking on his cell phone with his back turned towards me) so I thought that that was the place to turn right to go back south, so I did and it wasn’t until after I had made the turn did any one shout to me to keep going straight! And I was even yelling “which way” as I came up on the intersection! So I probably would have logged a faster time had I not slid off the road or taking a wrong turn!
I’ll be doing Racine too. I’ll be on the team with Robbie Greco and Hannah Mast. I’m going to try to get a 2:12 out of that one.

John,
Here you go
A "#$@%" car ran into me on the bike section! Damn near broke some bones!
In the last 1/2 mile, a car took a right turn across the closed off bike lane of the road. I tried to swerve but still hit their bumper and went flying. My left hip is pretty torn up and minor road rash everywhere. I managed to get back on my bike and ride slowly to transition. I was a wreck mentally. I managed to get my running shoes on and run a decent 10K time and still win.
A full race report will be on my blog in a few days. You'll enjoy reading that when it gets done.

Got Energy Triathlon: Wife and husband sweep intermediate distance races
By KIRK BEY | kbey@lacrossetribune.com
.
WEST SALEM — Adrienne Amman smiled. The “debriefing,” as she called it, likely would take place on their three-plus hour drive home Sunday to Wauwatosa, Wis.
Amman could take great satisfaction in a job well done. The Got Energy YMCA/Touchstone Energy Triathlon, a race she and her husband, Matt, had first heard about when they visited the area last winter, had been an enjoyable experience. Adrienne won the women’s intermediate distance race, which consisted of a nine-tenths mile swim, 24-mile bike ride and 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) run, in 2 hours, 18 minutes, 53.6 seconds. She beat runner-up Maggie Fournier of Onalaska by more than seven minutes.
For Adrienne, it had been a day worth talking about. And the perfect person with whom to discuss it would be sitting in the car seat next to her.
Matt had had a pretty incredible day himself, winning the men’s intermediate distance race in a course-record time of 1:59:27. He had done so while doing the final leg of the race, the 10-k run, with an aching left hip. It was the result of a collision with a motorist as he approached Swarthout Park on his bicycle.
Matt simply was looking forward to icing his leg and getting some rest. But Adrienne was happy knowing her husband of seven years would offer his opinion of the day’s events if she asked.
“He’s my guide and my coach,” Adrienne said of Matt, who, like her, graduated from Middleton High School and the University of Wisconsin. “He tells me what I need to do with my training and I say, ‘OK.’ ”
It’s no wonder.
Matt, 32, has completed one Ironman triathlon (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, 26.2-mile run), the Wisconsin Ironman, last year in Madison, and plans to compete in one later this summer in Louisville, Ky. He’s a chiropractor with a hectic schedule — he has his own practice in Milwaukee — but he has a strict, 20-hour-a-week workout regimen.
Adrienne, 30, is a speech therapist at the Milwaukee Veterans Administration Medical Center who also has a busy schedule that includes between 16 and 17 hours of training a week. Even though Matt and Adrienne don’t get to train together often, days like Sunday when they both perform well are a great way to spend a weekend.
“This (competing in triathlons) is just fun for us. We keep it light and just try to enjoy it,” Matt said. “This is our hobby.”
It’s the type of hobby that Adrienne is glad she shares with her husband. She knows he’s a good resource in helping her improve.
“You can learn something from every race,” Adrienne said. “There’s always something you can improve upon.”
SPRINT DISTANCE: Jeff Fleig of Onalaska won the men’s sprint distance title, which consists of a quarter-mile swim, 17-mile bike ride and 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) run, in 1:07:51.7. It was Fleig’s fourth title in the last six years.
Lynn Laux, also of Onalaska, was the women’s sprint distance champion with a time of 1:20:46.8.

Escape From Alcatraz
San Francisco, CA
June 14, 2009

2009 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon Course
SWIM
The Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon begins with a 8:00 am plunge from the ferry, into the icy cold water between the San Francisco Piers and Alcatraz Island. The boat is quite hot with 1000+ wet suit clad participants surrounding you, so we suggest you bring fluids. The currents, ebbs, and available dates make it difficult to determine the exact starting point. Participants are unloaded from the boat in less than 6 minutes. It is quite a rush when you take the leap, like a paratrooper from a plane, for the 1.5 mile swim. The swim finish is at the Marina Green Beach adjacent to the St. Francis Yacht Club. Triathletes face the risks of strong currents, treacherous 55 degree waters and two-ton sea lions. Wetsuits and hoods are strongly recommended.
WARM-UP RUN
Upon exiting the water at the Marina Green Beach, triathletes proceed to the first transition area where they will switch to running shoes and warm clothing for the 1 mile warm-up run to the Marina Green. This run will take them beside the St. Francis Yacht Club, South on the Little Marina Green, and East on the sidewalk of Marina Blvd to the bike transition area.
BIKE
Mounting their bikes at the Marina Green, triathletes will begin the out-and-back 18 mile ride heading west into Crissy Field via Marina Boulevard. They will climb onto Lincoln Blvd., traveling through the Presidio onto Camino del Mar. They will then climb up the hill to the Palace of the Legion of Honor. They will come down the hill and make a hard right turn onto Clement Street and ride west to Seal Rock Drive. They will make a sharp down hill left turn onto 48th street and then a right turn west on Point Lobos Drive; and ride South on The Great Highway to Golden Gate Park. Triathletes will enter Golden Gate Park from John F. Kennedy Drive onto Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. They will veer left on Middle Drive and go to about the center or the park. They will then turn left on Transverse Drive and make another left turn onto John F. Kennedy Drive; and ride back to the Great Highway on the north side of the park. After going north on The Great Highway, they will retrace their course back to the Marina Green for the transition to the run. Triathletes risk disqualification for drafting and forward motion to the left of demarcation cones.
RUN
On tired legs, the triathletes will begin the 8 mile run to Baker Beach Battery by leaving the Marina Green, running West into Crissy Field to Fort Point below the Golden Gate Bridge. From Fort Point they battle the Presidio Headlands up and under the Golden Gate Bridge through the tunnel and onto the Coast Trail. Runners will be next to the Coastal Defense Batteries (Gunnery Locations from the turn of the century) until they reach Lincoln Boulevard, just past Battery Dynamite. They parallel Lincoln Blvd. on the narrow trail above the Coastal Bluffs to Baker Beach, where they return to the shoreline below. They will encounter the deep sand of Baker Beach through the turn around point until they reach the dreaded Sand Ladder (400 steps up the cliff). This experience will drain the legs of even the best professionals, as there is nothing like it anywhere in the sport of triathlon. More than one triathlete has used the hand cable to help them walk up the stairs. The stairs are to the run what the currents and waves are to the swim. After reaching the top of the Sand Ladder, runners will go left on the Coast Trail and back to the Finish line via Lincoln Blvd. They will then cross back under the Golden Gate Bridge and get to sea level; it is just a matter of endurance to the Finish Line.

Save the best for last. Now for my last announcement:
* The following two GGs have been selected to receive the Elkhart Lake triathlon Team Manager Award! I wanted to select two individuals that exemplify what it means to be a GG. The two GGs I selected are: Brenda Schwaller and Nicholas Hardrath.
My selection was based on Performance, Determination and following the GG #1 Rule – Support Your Teammates!
Brenda was unable to compete last year due to her pregnancy. Well guess what? She’s back! Brenda has learned how to balance training, work, being a new mom and wife and was determined to compete with her teammates.
Nicholas is new to GG. His race results do not reflect his monumental determination to complete the Olympic 1.5K Swim. His positive attitude and how he puts his teammates first has not gone unnoticed!
Both will receive a Custom GG hooded sweatshirt supplied by Rob Boldt.
