Subject: Pain Tolerance
I was watching the Tour de France yesterday and saw an interview of one of the Astana riders who described the time trial effort and what he thought it took to improve and he said, 'You have to learn to love the pain.' Endurance sports are painful, training and racing are painful. I don’t think anyone who has competed for an appreciable amount of time can argue that claim.  Pain tolerance, or the highest level of pain sustainable before physical, mental or emotional impairment, is certainly one of the limiting factors to success in athletics on any given level. It is also something that is very trainable. Subjecting oneself to increasing amounts of pain, or digging deeper, pushing harder, can increase the level of pain you are able to withstand. It sounds a little masochistic but it is something we must all deal with if we want to improve. Try digging a little deeper on your next effort and I think you will see that it rewards you by hurting a little less the next time.

tourdeRoadAmerica – Bike Ride to Fight Cancer
Presented by Delta Dental
Friday, August 14, 2009 – 6:30 PM
RIDE ANNOUNCEMENT
To our cycling friends at PCW Cycling:
On Friday, August 14, 2009 at about 6:30 P.M. we will return to the famous 14 turns and sweeping hills of the 4.0 mile Road America race track in Elkhart Lake, WI for the 6th tourdeRoadAmerica – Bike Ride to Fight Cancer.
We would appreciate it if you could include a listing for the ride on PCW Cycling “Rides and Events” page, or better yet, include it in your next e-mail or newsletter to your members along with a link to our web site at www.pelotonride.org.
Downloadable web banners, buttons, or printable posters, ads, and brochures are located at http://www.pelotonride.org/downloads.html. This is a grassroots event organized entirely by volunteers. We appreciate your help in spreading the word!
For many cyclists, the tourdeRoadAmerica is one of their favorite rides of the year…no cars, a smooth track, great facilities, safe for the whole family, and a great cause!
As in previous years, we’ll take to the track with professional racing drivers from the American Le Mans and other racing series for this family-friendly event. The ride is open to all ability levels and all kinds of bikes. We even had one gentleman tackle the track on a unicycle!
Our goal is to raise USD 40,000 for the fight against cancer. The ride benefits the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the Austin Hatcher Foundation, the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, and the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic in Sheboygan, WI.
Thanks for your support!

River Valley rider killed in crash
By Tom Held of the Journal Sentinel
June 29, 2009
A 43-year-old bicycle rider from Slinger died Sunday after a crash during the River Valley Bike Ride near the Town of Trenton in Washington County, the local sheriff's department reported.
According to the release, Patrick Wagner tipped into the roadway on St. Augustine Rd. and into the path of a west-bound pick up truck. The truck and Wagner went off the north side of the road into the ditch.
The fatal crash brought the number of cyclists killed in Wisconsin this year to at least four, including a Madison man killed Friday night.
There, a 45-year-old cyclist was killed at a busy intersection on the city's east side.

Surgery put Hartley back in front
By Tom Held of the Journal Sentinel
July 2, 2009
Even when he won the jersey as the best sprinter in the 2008 International Cycling Classic Superweek, Chad Hartley fretted about his diminished power and endurance in the saddle.
His right leg weakened whenever he sought to sustain a hard effort for more than five minutes. He could sprint, but was losing ground on long climbs and time trials.
Two years of frustration ended with surgery in December to repair a damaged iliac artery near his hip, and the Team GEARGRINDER racer stamped himself officially cured with a victory in the inaugural Tour of America’s Dairyland. He took stage wins in the Giro d’ Grafton and the Downer Ave. Classic, and cashed two sprint prizes worth nearly $7,000.
In an interview following his victory, Hartley said success in the 10-race series removed any lingering doubts about his cycling health.
“Deep down, I really wanted to win and I knew that I was capable of winning. After my surgery over the winter, I wasn’t quite sure how I would hold up. I hadn’t raced for 10 or 11 days in a row. I knew my form was good and I knew I was in a position to have a good ride. I came out amazing.”
The recovery: In December, doctors grafted a vein from his ankle to replace the damaged portion of the iliac artery, which had “kinked” like a straw and restricted blood flow to his leg. Hartley, 28, started riding again in February.
“It felt awesome right away and I could get really low and really aerodynamic and my right leg wouldn’t die like it had.”
Cashing in on Downer Ave.: The bit prize in Hartley’s week of success was the $5,600 sprint prime offered by Ben’s Cycle in the Downer Ave. Classic criterium. After securing the cash award, he broke away to win the stage and line up the overall series title. It’s a beautiful thing when tactics and sprinting prowess come together.
“There have been some races on some other teams where collectively we made more money, but one shot one spring, that was the most lucrative.”
Embracing Milwaukee cycling: Hartley grew up in Hinsdale, Ill., where his family owns a bike shop, and turned pro at 19. Racing for Jittery Joe’s and other squads, he has lived in Georgia, Arizona, Portland and Colorado. He moved to Fox Point last year and joined team GEARGRINDER as a rider and manager.
“The Midwest scene can pretty much rival any other region in terms of its local racers. We have such a criterium bias here, so all the riders are really fast and really strong. I’d be willing to put most of our riders against just about any one in the region.”
